Round Britain & Ireland 2010

This is a once in a life time opportunity to join a committed racing team and take part in the Round Britain and Ireland Race. “The longest and toughest offshore yacht race in the UK”. To date the non stop race has only been sailed three times.

This fully crewed race is over 2,000 miles. Starting and finishing in the Solent we will race clockwise around the British Isles and Ireland. Do not confuse this event with those that cut of half of Scotland by diverting through the Caledonian Canal or those that miss out Orkney, Shetland and the Hebrides.

The race is a “must” for serious offshore racers, those looking for new challenges and the select few who are driven to really push themselves. Just completing the course is an achievement in itself.

RORC are famous for organising the Fastnet race every two years. In non Fastnet years they organise various alternative long distance events. For 2010 it’s the big one, the RBI. The race is over three times longer than the Fastnet and is likely to take 9-14 days, during that time our crew will be totally self sufficient, working in watch patterns to keep the boat performing, riding out rough weather when it arrives and fixing breakages as they occur. They will take on everything the Atlantic Ocean and North Sea have to throw at them and will join the select few sailors who have successfully circumnavigated the UK non stop.

Many charter companies offer places on high profile English Channel races such as the Fastnet. Only the top few companies have the experience and skill to undertake this much bigger challenge.

We have selected a First 40.7 for the campaign as this design has proven to be tough and competitive. The Skipper and mate successfully raced the yacht throughout the 2009 RORC Offshore Series and will be adopting the proven formulae that led our Principal and his team to victory in the last RBI, winning the event and series both in class and overall.

The Campaign consists of three training weekends, 4 qualifying races and the RBI itself. We will train and race over various weekends from April and the RBI itself is in August. The package price is £5,250 and payment plans are available. If you are interested, the first step is to discuss the campaign with either our Principal (Campaign Manager) or the Skipper. Once accepted a deposit of £250 will hold your place.

THE PROGRAM

Training Weekend 1 - afloat (9-11 April 2010). Welcome on the Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday will be devoted to sail training. Accommodation provided on board.

Training Weekend 2 - afloat (23-25 April 2010). Briefing on the Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday will be devoted to sail training. Accommodation provided on board.

ISAF Shore-based training weekend - (April, May or June 2010). Life raft and sea survival training takes place in the pool on Saturday. Heavy weather tactics are cover on the Sunday morning and offshore safety Sunday afternoon.

RORC Cervantes Trophy qualifying race - (31 April- 2 May 2010). Our first race of the campaign starts from Cowes and heads across the channel to Le Havre. The course will be between 90 and 160 miles. Following a meal out in France and a rest we will race back to Southampton on the Bank Holiday Monday. Accommodation provided on board form Friday evening.

Trophee Guillaume Le Conquerant (2-3 May 2010). The return race is 95 miles back to Cowes. Accommodation provided on board.

RORC Myth of Malham Round Eddystone Race (29-31 May 2010) Starting from Cowes the 230 mile course is to the Eddystone Lighthouse and back.

RORC Morgan Cup Race (11-13 June 2011). Starting on the Friday evening we will race from Cowes to Cherbourg, after a meal out in France we will use the passage back as a further training oppurtunity.

RORC Round Britain & Ireland (23 August for 9-14 days). Crew meet Sunday for final preparation and to take the boat over to Cowes, race starts Monday from Cowes. 2,500 miles later we will have raced non stop around the UK and be back in Cowes.

The race starts from Le Havre and crosses the Atlantic to the finish in Costa Rica. There will be a weekend regatta on the Beneteau 7.5's for all the skippers prior to the start of the Transat, the 7.5 regatta, when asked whether they wanted the kite as only two of them, Alex replied that spectators would not understand why they can fly a kite on there 20 metre yacht and and not the 7.5, good point!

The awards where presented at a champagne reception sponsored by The Grand Hotel on evening of Thursday Sept 24th. The evening was hosted by Olympic Gold medal winner Sally Gunnell OBE. Lagoon Watersports centre manager and the areas RYA Onboard sports development office, Mark Saul, presented the awards for "Best community Initiative and Best innovation Customer service".

Watching was not enough for the minister who was keen to get out on the water. He look like he had a great time on the water both sailing and windsurfing. See pictures below.

Lagoon Watersports managing director, Harvey Dawkins, explains why they have chosen to support the awards. "The Watersports centre at Hove Lagoon has been a public and private partnership right from the start some 16 years ago. Only by combining the passion and investment of the private sector with the local council, Sport England and Foundation for Arts and sport was it possible for the centre to be created. This public and private sector partnership has created a facility that is now an asset to the city. This partnership continues on a daily basis as the centre offers substantially reduced rates to over 60 schools and community groups within the City.

As a business we interact with the public sector workers on a daily basis, including the guys that empty the bins around the Lagoon, the council officers that manage the water quality and level of the Lagoon, the fire service that use the Lagoon to train , the teachers, community group leaders and many more public sector workers at all levels.

Without a strong relationship between Lagoon Watersports and the public sector all the positive experiences that occur at Hove Lagoon would not be possible.

We have chosen to support Brighton and Hove public service awards because we believe the public sector workers play a vital role in the quality of life of the city and frequently go unnoticed or rewarded."

Transitions - Gybing with style, one-handed gybes ala Robby Naish, duck gybes, taking with ease, heli tacks, duck tacks - you name it any way of turning around I'll see to it you can do it with your eyes shut.
Rotations - the embarrassingly easy forward loop - once you know the basic crucial steps that is ;-) also back loops and push loops and any other way you can think of to get inverted.

As with all my clinics don't worry about the forecast as there will be lots to do on and off the water. Practicing the right things when it isn't windy can really help out when it is and i've got a whole bunch of things that even pros practice blobbing around in light wind! I have a feeling October will be nuking and warm!

Nik Baker shows Lagoon kids the way

The masterclass was aimed at 9-12 years olds to help them learn to windsurf with tips and techniques from the legendary World Champion whilst improving their skills on the water.

22 children from the OnBoard initiative were taught how to windsurf in a two-hour session, hosted by White Air participant and star Nik Baker, who will be performing at this year’s festival, and his brother Ant was there to lend a helping hand. Brighton trained Nik Baker, who is set to perform in front of the extreme sports world alumni at White Air Festival, is a former World Champion and coach to man of the moment Peter Andre. Nik has been winning windsurfing titles around the world since the early 1990s and he was one spot off the PWA World Title this year! He is idolised by windsurfers and is arguably Britain's most successful and best-known windsurfer of all time.

Nik Baker said:

“It’s been a great experience coming to Hove Lagoon to lend my expertise to the children. We started with some basic technique teaching, but some of the kids picked up on the easy stuff really quickly, so before long they were trying their hand at the more technical stuff. I think I may have some serious competition on my hands!

“As someone who is from the area, I would love to see some more Windsurfing talent coming out of the region, you never know, one of the guys here today could be a future superstar. Hopefully, if the children come along to White Air Festival next week they will be able to identify some of the tricks of the trade that various Windsurfers are using – it should be a good way to impress their mates.”

We work with over 60 local schools and community groups to offer watersports experiences. These take part both in and out of school time and vary from "try watersports" sessions to full RYA training courses. We even provide yacht sailing and Powerboat training for school groups.

Now for the bit I've been dreading all day. And the bit that Charlie's been getting more and more excited about all day - windsurfing lessons in Hove Lagoon. Don't get me wrong, I love a bit of adventure sport as much as the next under-stimulated city dweller, but it's not my calling in life, and like I mentioned before, it's not exactly sweltering today.

I've spent the last hour thinking about how nice it would be to spend the afternoon in some happy-hour bar along the front, but Charlie's so excited and acting like a little kid that I can't bear to take the wind out of her sails - ha ha 'wind' 'sails' get it?… oh god this is getting desperate, I have to go don't I?

We jumped on a local bus along the coast road to Hove. We could have walked it, but didn't realise how close it was. Hove Lagoon Watersports offers a 2-hour 'Get Wet Windsurfing' in the learner-friendly lagoon. 'Get Wet Windsurfing'. It couldn't just be 'Windsurfing'.

Hello. The instructor's really rather dishy, this could be an interesting afternoon after all.

Or not. Trying to look sexy with mascara running down your face and choking on your own hair is not easy.

I'm so bad at this my only hope left is to playing the hapless damsel who needs saving - save me Dave, save me!

Damn. Charlie's having much more luck with Dave playing the I've-picked-up-windsurfing-in-5-minutes-damsel-on-a-mission. She's like a bloody Rip Curl champion or something.

The 2 hours fly by and by the end of the session I'm standing up on the board and really rather enjoying myself - who's fabulous idea was this windsurfing malarkey anyway? Even forgot about Dishy Dave I was having so much fun.

Fastnet race

WE HAVE 1 SPACE TO JOIN OUR FASTNET TEAM - Email seb for details

The race was very good, but probably one of the toughest race we did so far. Well attended (193 boats competing at the start line). Very challenging, approx. 170 miles with difficult weather conditions. Strong winds up to force 6, mostly on the beat and rain. The night sail was down wind, still with strong winds (force 6) and rain with rollers you could classify as Atlantic rollers. Highly rewarding though. We finished in 30h 8 min and 8s and looking at the provisional results (attached), in 29th position out of 41 in our class.

Once in St Malo, we turned back and sailed for another 34 hours. Got back to Brighton at 03.30 am on Monday.

We were 9 on board, Split into 2 teams, team A Buck, Martin, Dave and Leigh and team B Andy, Colin, Ken and me. We worked on a 4 hours on / 4 hours off rota which worked well. Steve was the Skipper and was on watch and on duty for both shifts.

Thoroughly enjoyable, great team effort, fantastic experience!

Lagoon Onboard sailing and windsurfing raises over £500 for charity

June 27th saw the Brighton and Hove Take Part Festival at Preston Park in the center of Brighton. The event was launched by local girl Sally Gunnell, was attended by 15,000 people and was a great success. Mark Saul ODO for Mid Sussex was there alongside Lagoon Watersports to promote some special learn to sail Onboard Taster Sessions.

The day was a great success with a very high volume of people visiting the stand to have a go on the

Sail for Cancer Americas Cup style winch provided by Lewmar. So far 170 kids have signed up for learn to windsurf and dinghy sailing taster sessions.

The tasters kicked off on Sunday 28th June and all the children attending had an awesome time in the light winds and lovely sunshine. Ateya Marshall from Middle Street School took part in both sailing and windsurfing tasters and had such a great time she wants to try and come down with her whole class next term. She enjoyed windsurfing the most because she thought it was more of a challenge and really enjoyed falling in!

The taster sessions have helped to raise over £500 for Sail for Cancer, and with more festivals coming up Mark hopes to raise even more.

The wind made the event even more challenging as it varied in strength and direction (BFT 1-3 NW to SW)! The 3.5M class had an impressive 17 strong, which made racing hugely competitive, only a few points separated the top 5 sailors. Team Aqua Sports Aquanauts dominated the event as they consistently finished in the top 3 in all race classes. Many thanks to Krafty and the Lagoon team for organising the event.

The BBC’s ‘THE ONE SHOW’ is running a feature on how Hayling Island and Peter Chilvers have a claim to fame for being the birth place and inventor of windsurfing - 50 years ago!

It’s virtually unheard of that six million people get to see windsurfing on national TV. It’s just as rare to get the chance to sail a replica of the very first windsurfing board ever made! Bank holiday weekend a huge hit at Lagoon Watersports

Over the bank holiday Lagoon watersports made 90 windsurfing and taster sessions place available for just £5 each. Lagoon director Harvey Dawkins explains:

"The response was amazing. We released the spaces by email late on Wednesday afternoon and we where completely sold out before 10am the next morning. Apologies to all the people we had to turn way. We will have some more taster sessions available as part of the Take Part Festival and Paddle Round the Peir."

Saturdays nights "Dress and Party like an animal" party was a huge success raising £210 for Sail 4 Cancer and the animal theme going down a storm.

We have now extended the range of courses we can offer in Barcelona, in addition to the range of RYA Yacht courses we now also run Powerboat courses and ICC tests plus the Theory courses from RYA Basic safety and navigation to Yachtmaster.

The Yacht Training package is now more integrated with Barcelona so you will be able to mix and match courses run in the UK with ones in Barcelona.

For example you could go on the Part 1 of your Competent crew or Dayskipper course in Barcelona and then complete the Part 2 in Brighton. Prices for upgrades to Barcelona are from £99 - £125.

The next practical course on offer from Barcelona is the 20th April for five days.

Vendee is 24,000 miles around the globe with a record time of 87 days and 10 hours which will surely be beaten this year. With seven out of the thirty entries being British, will this be the first time Britain wins the Vendee Globe? Quite a challenge and not an easy race, however there has been a vast improvement in safety and experience since the disastrous 1979 race which ended in 17 deaths.

We are at this point looking for those who are interested in taking part in an all inclusive package, then we can guage whether we have enough interest to start a campaign.

If you can remember back to the start of July, you may recall one weekend that showed off quite how

ridiculous British weather can be. It was Paddle Round the Pier weekend - Saturday on Hove lawns

was one of the ? nest days we’ve seen this year.

Then Sunday... the storm came! Whilst people were ordered to get marquees down by the authorities

and most of us ran for cover from the torrential rain, some people got excited about the bene? ts of

such weather.

Force 7 or 8 winds, going in the wrong direction and these guys hit the water!

Nobody seems quite sure whether it is 5 or 6 saturdays with planing winds in a row. what is certain is the last 5 or 6 weeks have produced some of the most reliable winds we ever get to see in the summer in the UK and both members and staff have been out having a ball. Windsurfers may love the strong winds but Pico sailor Neil was the real star showing what a Pico can really do. See video below.

Paddle round the Pier Sunday dawned with with a solid force 7, not what they wanted and a bit much for the windsurf slalom racers at the Lagoon. They got 2 races done before giving up. However local knowledge told us it would get good later and a few hours after high high tide the wind swung almost cross shore, dropped a bit and the sun came out. It was on.

Tricky launch where Mark made me look a prat by sailing straight out whilst a decided an good rinse in the shore break was in order. third try luck , ears full of pebbles and some how Hot Sail and mast in one piece I was out. Great time had , later joined by Vinney , Laird and a host of others.

It looks like an exciting weekend ahead ! It looks windy from Saturday through to Wednseday ! Bad news is high tides are about 2pm on Saturday so if you want to get on the sea you will need to make an early start as it will be pretty rough.

Don't forget we will be hosting the Neil Prdye / UKWA windsurf slalom race event over the weekend so there should be plenty of action to watch out on the sea ! More advanced sailors can enter the event - best call us ASAP about that.

We will also be at paddle round the pier with Jo leach competing on a raft ! Come and see us at our stand on the east lawn after you have sailed

We are heavily involved in this years event with lots going on at the Lagoon.

Neil Pryde windsurf slalom race series

Now the wind has kicked in we are pleased to let you know we have a few more sea boards on the way. We have ordered a Starboard Isonic 133 for you speedsters and some more Starboard Kombats due to popularity last season. Boards should be with us this week in time for the wind later in the week.

Here are a few tips from Guy to make sure you get the most out of your sea sailing

He has put together this guide to hopefully ensure everyone has a solid understanding of the procedures we must take to go out to sea.

When you arrive at the lagoon always check the weather board, this will either say NO SAFETY COVER- fairly self explanatory, FULL SAFETY COVER- this means anyone can go on the water and the boat is out ready to go OR BUDDY SAILING ONLY- This means that people go on the water but there isn't a boat ready to go, as the conditions are too extreme. In this case there will be a minimum level e.g. Water Starters Only

If you are unsure about what kit to take grab a member of staff, they are always happy to lend their advice. Lagoon sails are not allowed on the sea. Please be aware there is a separate UJ bin for sea and Lagoon UJs.

Always check your equipment. Check all ropes , the UJ , harness lines , the fin and mast foot are tight and foot straps.

When you are ready to go make sure you check at reception where to sign out. It will either be there or on the beach

Always try and launch as close to the Upwind groin as possible, this lessens the chance of snagging the downwind groin on the way out.

DONT BE A HERO! If you find yourself downwind of the sailing area come into the beach and do the legendary walk of shame we have all done it- it makes you a better person.

Please don't see me as a taxi service, in doing so you might be putting someone else at danger.

If you come in for any reason please sign in immediately, even if you are just having a breather, snack, sunbathe etc. I am constantly doing head counts therefore the sign out sheet needs to be correct.

Mixed bag on the wind front , quite a lot of it but not a good direction for sea sailing. Mad Saturday , pictured below, the Lagoon was more like the M25. However less than ideal windsurfing did mean plenty of other stuff happened, including

New Saturday morning Pico racing at Lagoon - more
Aqua Skipping was a big hit till they broke. they should be back soon.
Some great sailing was had at the Marina with 25 people for one clinic
Stand up paddle boarding took Lagoon by storm. Last Saturday saw Edward Hart leading the way catching waves.
We managed a couple of sessions of wake boarding behind the boat and a couple of grinch winch sessions at members clinics. Don't miss out - if the wind does not show you never know what will happen at the clinics - you have to be there.

Hi again from the Costa Brava,

I’ve managed to get out on my travels again and thought I’d share a couple more photo’s with you.

I mentioned last time the rugged coast line, well here are a few shots of Cap De Crues, which is about a 45 minute drive from here. And a stunning drive it is too.

If you are into your Geology or indeed wild flowers this is a must visit spot.

It really is worth hiring a car and exploring the area for a few days

Hi from the Costa Brava,

I’ve had the opportunity to do a bit of exploring since I’ve been here and I have to say that the Costa Brava has so much more to offer than I’d expected.

Obviously, as its name suggests, it has beautiful beaches and a rugged coastline; but inland is perhaps where the big surprises come.

Looking back from our beach you can see the snow capped Pyrenees and a short drive inland towards them will soon have you passing through the most beautiful scenery.

I took a 40 minute drive the other day, parked up and went exploring on foot.

There is a whole network of marked paths you can follow, which if you are feeling particularly adventurous or energetic will even take you into France.

The path I chose took me higher to a point above a reservoir. The views were truly breathtaking. The Pyrenees in one direction and a panoramic view of The Bay of Roses, and the lowlands in front of it, in the other. The great thing is that it’s so close that it can be done in a morning and still be back for a great windsurf in the afternoon!!

Most people that come here fly into Girona. That’s probably the last they think of it but they shouldn’t. It’s a great city to visit. It’s obviously smaller than Barcelona, Catalunya’s capital, but it has a huge historical heritage as well. The old part, including the cathedral, rises upwards from the river. A gentle climb to the top again affords some beautiful views.

Over 100 new windsurfers took part in taster sessions over the weekend. Harvey summed the success of the event up " It was really good to see how excited people where by windsurfing, it was really rewarding for the instructors that about 15 people signed up for RYA courses already."

When the wind dropped we turned our hand to SUP and Grinch Winch Waterski on the Lagoon followed by killer party with Live music which rocked Hove seafront till the early hours. A big thanks should go to Surfladle , Steve Agar and Oceansports for providing some great prizes for our Sail4Cancer prize draw.

The New Yachting Season Starts In Barcelona

Our first yacht course of the year in Barcelona has just finished and we had the full range of conditions to kick the season off!

Matt, Diane, Rob and Bobby joined Gareth and I for a trip north along the coast of Costa Brava.

We left Sitges on a fairly windless day and motor sailed to Barcelona. We arrived in plenty of time to enjoy the delights of this exciting city. It really is a great place to wander around or just sit in a pavement bar and watch the world go by.

The following day we headed for Blanes and covered the 40 odd miles in good time with a following wind. Great for downwind sailing and helming practice.

As if to order, our next day was a full on upwind day. We had a fairly heavy but exilerating beat up to San Feliu de Guixols (try saying that 3 times on the radio!!)

Both places had nice marinas that were close to town for a bit of evening exploring, and of course a well earned beer.

The next day was a lot calmer and we left the marina, after some parking practice, for some more skills and drills such as man over board recovery under sail and motor.

We then headed down to Tossa Del Mar and had lunch at anchor.

The rest of the day was spent sailing and motoring down to Barcelona, which we entered at night for some night pilotage practice. Despite our late arrival there was still time for a quick libation to celebrate landfall!

The next morning saw departure for Sitges. Diane, Matt and Gareth headed for Brighton while Rob and Bobby took the opportunity to extend their break and stayed on for a few days in Sitges.

All in all an excellent trip. Every one successfully completed their Competent Crew and we hope to see every one again in the future to move on the Day Skipper qualification.

The charity has the following aims

To raise significant funds for cancer treatment, care and research through the organisation of high profile sailing events.

To provide sailing opportunities for cancer patients/their families and those who have suffered recent bereavement in the hope that their quality of life may be improved.

Cathy Jenkins from Sail 4 Cancer said: "We were delighted to be approached by Lagoon Watersports with their wonderful ideas to raise much needed funds for the charity and we are extremely grateful for their very kind support. We firmly believe that getting out onto the water, whether to raise funds or as a respite from illness, gives everyone an amazing boost. We certainly see this with the cancer patients and their families who we take sailing."

You can help by booking a windsurf taster session for yourself or a friend as part of national windsurfing week. A session is £5 with a £2.50 donation to Sail 4 Cancer.

In addition to raising funds for cancer treatment and research Sail 4 Cancer aims to improve the quality of life for those living with cancer. This is achieved mainly through the provision of sailing opportunities for cancer patients, their families and those who have been recently bereaved through cancer. In 2007 Sail 4 Cancer provided over 1,000 sailing days for people living with cancer.

It may be cold but that id not stop Lagoon members getting the season off to a great start. Thursday saw a Mark, Steve , Gareth and Andy out windsurfing on the sea. Good Friday dawned with members christening the grinch winch. Star of the show was 73 year old Gordon who put a few of the youngsters in there place !!!

Nikki was on hand to revive us all with bacon sandwiches and costa Coffee... Roll on a great summer.

New toys for 2008 season

You bounce up and down to make the wind fly and

propel you. If you stop you fall in so it is a great way to keep fit and attract attention!

It is hard to do at first but that seems to make it even more fun to try and get the hang of.

The Lagoon is perfect with no need to swim the Aquaskipper back if you stop pumping and sink.

Stand up paddle boards have been around a while but now they have really hit the surfing world and add a great new aspect to surfing and getting on the water, perfect for a chilled paddle to keep fit or use on a few waves as easier than a normal long board with no need to lay down and paddle to get through the waves.

We have replaced the Dart 16 with a Laser Stratus centreboard, basically the same as the Stratus keel but by loosing the keel you loose loads of weight. So beware it will tip over but you will be rewarded with greater performance. We have also invested in 6 New Laser Picos for the lagoon to replace some of the older Picos and having employed a full time dedicated safety cover person we hope to improve dinghy members access to the sea from Hove lagoon beach

A range of new windsurf kit will be ordered soon, one of the themes is to invest in more performance windsurf kit for the Lagoon as well as replace and enhance our sea sailing kit.

Grinch Winch

New for members this year is the Grinch winch. After receiving the grinch winch at the end of last year the staff have been experimenting(playing) with the grinch on the lagoon Wakeboarding.

It is ideal for persons who have skied before as the initial pull from the winch is too much for beginners to control.

Obviously we are restricted when we can use the winch as no other users can be on the lagoon, with this in mind we are offering some early winching for skiers and Wakeboarder over this coming Easter weekend from 0930 till 1100.

If you fancy a go absolutely free then you need to sign up to text alerts and book your place as first come first served basis.

The sessions will start promptly at 0930 for a briefing running on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Flights are easy to organize on the Internet, RYANAIR fly direct to Girona which is 35 minutes from the windsurf site. EASYJET or BA are also good options if you want to fly to Barcelona for a nights stop; you can get a train from Barcelona to the Windsurf site for only €8-€10 which takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

The Quest

A great forecast of massive swell and strong winds for the North East coast of England lead us making a mad 28 hour raid in the hunt for epic wave sailing.

Five of us hired a van , filled it with kit, argued about who sat where and headed north. After 9 hours driving we pulled into our chosen beach car park at 4am. Good news, it was howling, waves where huge, bad news, it was 3 degrees C !!

Dawn showed massive waves, the temperature had not ye hit 30 but we where trying to be optimistic. After breakfast in the Zetland café , almost worth the trip for the experience, very 1970’s we started the quest.

To cut a long day on the road short, the swell was too big for the reefs, the water was black, really black, it never got above 6 degrees and then thank god the wind dropped. So we came home !!!

28 hour trip , 18 hours there and back, 3 hours sleep, the rest of time wave hunting and no sailing. Rubbish trip- are we going back of course, but to a slightly different place further north and not in the winter.

That is what windsurfing is really about – you have to be an optmist – it will break you if you other wise – tomorrow will be windy , or the day after that….

This winter we are adding a new service to allow members to access their own equipment when we are closed.

If you wish to sail on the sea when we are closed and have your own equipment we will provide you with an area that you can store and access your equipment. There is only a very small charge for this, for more details call Lucy , Jan or Mark on 01273 42 48 42.

Don't forget we will be closed the whole of Jan and Feb so you need to organise this NOW

The bay turns into a mass of colour and action. It’s hard not to be enthused by the atmosphere. Locals and visitors alike hit the water to windsurf and kitesurf in the spacious bay. The event was a great success, with Edward and James Hart taking part from the Lagoon. The camp made use of the Lagoon great location combined by pulling together some of the best sailors and instructors in teh country to coach the future young talent.

We have had some fun testing the winch - bottom line is it is sooo much fun.

Here is what Ryan posted on the forum:

"I couldn’t believe how much fun this little machine was. At first I just thought it was one of Harvey’s little plans, which he gets hook on, but I was wrong.

It took me three attempts to stand but it was worth it. Once up I was surprised how easy it was, so the first run I took it easy just doing a 180 frontside slide at the end but bailing. So I jumped out ran the rope all the way to the other side to have another go. This time I was up first time and I was going all out! Half way I quickly done a frontside slide so I was switch the carved for a while then as I approached the end I tried a frontside 180 jump and landed it, which I was surprised with. I carve to a halt before I hit the edge of the lagoon and that was me done for the evening."

Yacht trip to France

Jacob and Michael S planned the trip as they were completing the second weekend of Day Skipper and the rest of the crew got the yacht (NO X) ready for the trip across. After a safety

Heading out of Brighton the wind was forecast from the SW 3/4 which was great. As we got further out to sea, the wind increased to 4/5 and we were making 7 kt SOG with one reef in and full head sail. With the wind on the beam 90 deg's to the boat we made our way toward fe camp.

Every hour we made logs entries and checked our position by EP, cross-referenced with the GPS, to make sure we were going the right way and not towards Cowes.

Happy days, the sun was out and the wind was blowing true, as we got to around 22NM off shore we came to the shipping lane. First we had boats coming from the left, then from the right and there were lots of big ships to miss! Our helm, Celine, did a great job of getting us across safely and we were still making great time. As we got closer toward the French coastline, the sun was setting and so the night sail was on. It was great night for a sail with a clear sky and lots of stars.

Saturday
We woke up to a very sunny day. After making ourselves pretty and having fresh bacon baguettes for breakfast, we headed out to precaution MOB and to go over sailing manoeuvres (tacking, gybing). We headed back to practise some parking and then we watch the sun set from the beach. Finally, we made it out for some dinner and some beers...

Sunday
We were all up early at 5 am for our sail back after a hard night on the town. Wind was coming form the south (wind from behind) to start with so we motored out of fecamp in the dark to catch the sunrise. As the sun rose, the wind picked up and veered to the SW (force 4) that was forecast. As the boat's speed picked we set to beam reach back toward the English coast and across the shipping lanes once again. The ship lanes were busy and we had to harden up a few times to get around the back of some big ships (see pics). As we approached the coast, the wind was picking up so are crew put in a reef of the main sail, still the wind was increasing so we rolled away the head sail (the one at the front). As the wind came to around 22kt we put in the second reef in the main and the sea became lumpy. We took some big waves over the bow and got some of the crew a bit wet - it was a good job we had our waterproofs on, but this was no problen for the yacht.

As the Downs came into view, we were making good headway, then on the nose we saw Brighton. We'd made the crossing in good time (around 10-hours). Our skippers, Michael and Jacob, did a fantastic job of getting us across the channel and back and, with the help of our crew Michael G and Celine, we drop rolled our head sail and dropped are main. We finally called in on the vhf to base to say we were home,

Make the most of your windsurfing time

To get the most out of your windsurfing time you need to know what the weather is doing , and equally important what the tide is doing. Nothing more frustrating getting to the beach and finding it was great two hours ago, but now there is a massive shore break.

Step 1
Know what conditions are you are looking for. If in doubt see our windsurf or sailing page or ask one of the staff for the best conditions for your ability.

Step 2
Plan ahead – use our web site to get an idea of the out look. Go to the weather page and you will find a whole host of resources. Our weekly out look will give you a rough idea but I recommend the Brighton 3 day out look at the top right of the page. For longer range forecasts click on this box, and for even more detail click the detail tab

Say you are planning to sail this weekend on the sea then check the tides by clicking the Middle box, todays tides, this will give the tides for the next week.

Putting this information together will allow you to get a rough plan in mind. So at the time of writing it looks like the Sunday from 11- 4 will be force 3/4, low tide is at 3pm, the wind is southerly. Given that is probably best to to paln to head down the Lagoon about midday.

Keep an eye on the forecast – they always change so check it regularly

The 1st visit to Lagoon Espana was a great success. It delivered just about everything promised with wind , flat water, good kit and it really felt like the Lagoon but on a hot sunny beach in Spain. In the end there where 13 of us, which made a it very sociable – to find more about what we and other thought check out the forum.

Land boarding in Iraq

I hope this reaches the lagoon ok, I thought I would update you all on my progress on the landboard action!! Firstly i have to thank all that were involved in getting the kit together you cant imagine how much pleasure it gives me to annoy the air traffic control of the airfield by blasting about on the board! They will learn, if its windy i take priority!! I am working hard on my technique, which to be honest is progressing quickly its amazing how a concrete floor makes you want to stay on the board and fully commit! I have a few scars to prove it! I am gonna put the footstraps back on and try a couple of jumps, I have some riot gear to wear to soften the inevitable flaws!!

Another lagoon UK first as we bring you the Grinch Winch. Essentially a petrol winch that allows us to pull skier and wake boarders down the Lagoon. How cool is that !

Waterstarting!! "I wish"
I like quite a few other members am currently struggling with sea conditions and in particular waterstarting. Assuming you get throught the shorebreak and take on the ocean with that great "hey I have cracked this feeling" then that first turn, gybe, tack, sea monster et al, takes u down and it all looks very different bobbing around with all the other flotsam and jetsam, contemplating buying an ice cream at the rapidly aproaching west pier!

So how about a clinic on and in the sea with the safety boat saving the walk home and hopefully taking away some of the jitters, and fears and sea monsters that we all know are out there!!
Next sunday if conditions are right could be good what do you all think?

How to improve your windsurfing the fastest way

If you want to get on the sea you should think about doing the weekend Fast Fwd course. It works.

Clinics - nights drawing in

With the nights drawing in we are starting to have to close earlier. The centres will now close at 7pm , which means off the water about 6.30pm. This also means there will be no more Thursday evening clinics this season.

Sunday clinics will continue as usual at 3pm at both centres.

The course leaves Brighton Marina on Monday, Sept 3rd, returning on the Friday and is suitabke for complete novices and those looking to gain the Day Skipper qualification.

According to the Sunday Times the Med is smart choice in the autumn, "temperature are friendlier, if you are lucky, P Diddy and his charming yacht will have moved on." Only to be replcaed by Seb and Lagoon Espana !

We are running a full range of yacht courses, trips and charters all autumn on a great Bavaria 50ft yacht. options include trips along the the beautiful Costa Brava coast or out to the Islands.

Join one of our organised trips lead by Seb or arrange a charter on dates to suit yourself.

Course prices are very similiar to our UK based rates, accommadation is provide on aboard, so all you need is a flight and perhaps a couple of extra days for sight seeing.
